When I took on a labor-intensive repair job, I decided to record every noise I made for eventual use in this song. This was remarkably peaceful, knowing that every harsh sound would eventually be turned into something wonderful.

This is a recording of sounds made while replacing the bearing on Whirlpool Cabrio washing machine, model WTW8800YW0.

The WTW8800YW0 began making an extraordinarily loud sound during the washing cycle. Eventually the appliance began to generate an “unbalanced load” code (UL) and finally erupted grease under the machine onto the floor. This grease ejection is reflected in the album cover image.
Research identified a number of instances of WTW8800YW0, and similar Whirlpool Cabrio models, producing the same fault and failure. The steps to replacing the bearing appeared labor-intensive, but not significantly complicated. With an investment of parts and effort, WTW8800YW0’s bearing was replaced over the span of a few evenings.
Audio recordings were made during the whole of the repair effort on the WTW8800YW0. Nearly 200 audio clips were derived from the effort, and 42 of these files were transformed into instrument tracks.
Composition for WTW8800YW0 was produced entirely from these audio tracks. The result was an unsettling yet compelling orchestration of percussion, rhythm, and noise.
A combination of online resources was used to ensure a successful replacement of the WTW8800YW0 bearing. Here are a few of the more valuable online sites:
